Brand and language

Most brands do not fail at the logo. They fail because nobody can say in one sentence what the company stands for. That sentence interests me more than everything that comes after it.

Why the one sentence matters more than the logo.

How I go about it

I do not start with design but with the question of what a company can do that its competitors cannot. Usually the people inside know exactly what that is, they just consider it obvious. That is where the brand normally sits.

Language comes next, images last. An identity that makes an unclear position look good only postpones the problem. It then surfaces in sales, not in the design review.

Once a position holds, the rest goes quickly: logo, colours, type, website and trade fair presence follow from it instead of being negotiated one by one.
